If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million.  You can say as much or more with a one and a half minute video as you can with 2 or 3 pages of text. In our busy world, if a patient has a choice between reading a 3 page blog and watching a one and a half minute video, the large majority will choose the video. It’s simply more efficient, not to mention less labor intensive than writing a 2-3 page blog.  It’s also more dynamic which translates to increased engagement.  Perhaps most importantly, it’s starting to dominate online activity. In fact, according to Cisco, by 2017, video will account for 69% of all consumer internet traffic.  With those kinds of numbers, you simply can’t afford NOT to incorporate video into your marketing campaign.

Here are our top 5 reasons you should create a YouTube Channel for your practice:

  1. Branding: One of the most successful advertising campaigns was Apple’s Silhouette campaign (see video below).  In this and other videos in the campaign, the brand is immediately recognizable from the black silhouettes wearing white headphones dancing against a neon background, even before Apple’s logo was shown in the video.  After that campaign, you couldn’t see white headphones without associating them with Apple products.  This is the hallmark of successful branding.   In private practice medicine, your medical practice IS your brand.  You must create content that sets you apart from your competition.  Video is a great tool for this as it enables you to get creative.
  2. Personalization: Video is an effective way to incorporate the human side of your practice into your marketing efforts.  For instance, adding video to the ‘Meet the Staff’ page of your website can really add dimension to that page.  Watching a video of a doctor tell you about why he or she got involved in their practice specialty is a lot more effective than reading about it.  Video enables you to showcase staff personalities in a way that the written word can’t.
  1. Exposure: YouTube has more than 1 billion unique visitors each MONTH.  Over 6 billion hours of video are watched each month, which is a 50% growth from last year.  Establishing a presence on YouTube can simply help you reach more prospective patients.
  1. SEO: YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the world.  It’s second only to Google and Google owns YouTube.  Google algorithms for search engine placement are complex and ever-changing.  But, one thing is for certain, video can definitely help your organic SEO rankings. In fact, Forrester Research found that videos were 53 times more likely than traditional web pages to receive an organic first-page ranking.[i]
  1. Social Media Content: Video gives you content for social media posts on other platforms such as Facebook.  It’s also the type of content that gets more fan engagement than text alone.  Since social media posts are all about engagement (likes, comments and shares), it’s a win-win.

Conclusion:  We live in a dynamic visual world.  YouTube gives you an opportunity to capitalize on this.  When done right, adding video to your repertoire of marketing efforts can only help you.  With video, you can brand and personalize your practice, gain exposure on YouTube and most importantly, improve your rankings on search engines such as Google.
